The year 2020 has been mostly uneventful because of the pandemic. Because of this, Fashion Upended has made predictions about sustainability for 2021. Continue reading to know what they are.

1. Fashion Focusing on Biodiversity Protection

Because of their commitment to the Post 2020 Global Diversity Framework in China in 2021, many countries are expected to focus on biodiversity protection.

This means that businesses from different industries are encouraged to safeguard biodiversity in their operations. This is to reduce loss and protect the environment.

In fact, businesses in the fashion industry are expected to lessen land use in creating fabrics such as leather, cotton, wool, and cashmere to reduce the loss of species and their habitats.

Inspiration and innovation in fabrics and textiles are also expected to gear towards biodiversity. That is because there can be an increase in the use of biodegradable materials and sustainable cotton.

2. Virtual Shopping

Another prediction we have is more people will be doing virtual shopping. In fact, the pandemic has caused more brands to engage in e-commerce and work more on their customers’ online shopping experience.

Therefore, online stores are expected to rise because of the use of social media such as Instagram. In addition, many brands will get influencers to direct their followers to their websites. Overall, we see no signs that this will slow down even after the pandemic.

3. Shoppers Wanting to See Evidence on Businesses’ Sustainability Efforts

Because of the increase in the desire for an ethical market, many shoppers report that they are becoming more aware of making purchases aligned with their values.

As a result, they want to see evidence from brands that claim and advertise their products as ethical, responsibly sourced, or sustainable. Greenwashing is becoming more and more prevalent, so consumers demand direct proof from the brands.

However, it is expected that only very few shoppers would rely on the brands saying that their products are sustainable. One reason for this is that the pandemic magnified the concerns of people about the environment.

Moreover, they will depend on platforms that indicate businesses that can be trusted concerning being sustainable. It has been reported that even shoppers who are not very immersed in sustainability will demand proof.
